Go Team!

Things that we did this weekend at the Hexagon

  • cleaned the heck out of the whole place, including the main room, bathrooms, bar, gallery, storage room, and basement
  • took a major truck haul to the dump
  • primed and repainted the ENTIRE gallery and front desk (the paint we had been using was cheapish and gray and kind of ugly). this took sooooo long.
  • patched up a big hunk of broken drywall
  • etched, degreased, and repaired the gallery’s concrete floor (final coating today! it’s looking sooooooo good so far!)
  • took a couple breaks for karaoke and junk food
  • repainted the whole back hallway

so much so much so much! my body is KILLIN me. I’m sure we are all very exhausted and this Monday has been uniquely painful already. but the space is looking wonderful and we are all really excited. I have pretty much booked the space (and soon to be auxiliary project space) until October and I’m looking forward to all of the shows. WOO TEAMWORK!

It’s no news that word travels fast here in Smalltimore… After pushing our press release yesterday, we’ve already had some responses and recaps. I’m so thankful to be a part of not only this collective, but also this greater community that understands and supports our mission and goals. <3 u, Baltimore.

Baltidelphia Press

Was way too swamped last week/weekend to link these, but the show that Alex and I curated has been getting some press!

A writeup in the Sun by Tim Swift. I have some mixed feelings about the article, but I think they mostly stem from how hyper-sensitive one can become when it’s a project they’ve been working on for months and months and months, and perhaps an objective opinion is different from how they see it. In any case, I’m really glad that some of the artists were able to share their experience, and I hope it brought some people outside of our usual audience to the show. We’ve already sold two pieces!

Artblog of all artblogs, the artblog I read religiously while in grad school, home to some of my favoritist art writers and thinkers, did a bit about the show too! So thrilled we got a mention from this blog I so admire.

A few pictures are up on Radar Redux’s flickr. Thanks for visiting, guys!

Must say, after all the stress and coordinating and calming down the other artists who were stressed, Alex and I are pretty pleased with how things came together. Some artists had really successful experiences and will continue their correspondence; other artists weren’t as enthusiastic, but I think they were nonetheless able to learn more about their studio practice. What I loved was hearing so many participants say that they learned to work in a way they never had before, and that they started asking themselves all sorts of new questions. Awesome!

The joint opening in Philly was a success, we raged pretty late into the evening, and I got some much needed catch up time with my old Philly crew. (I’d say we had a little too much fun; I’m still hibernating a bit in recovery!) I’m also really excited that we’ll be hosting the Philly kids down here for the closing. It sounds like there will be quite a few of them caravaning together, and I expect it to be an all around super crazy fun time happy. Freda and Andrew will be doing a more involved version of their AMAZING performance piece (not sure what the permissions are on that facebook vid… sorry!), and I think we’ll have a combination of Bmore and Philly bands that night. Followed by whatever cavorting/celebrating/on the town we’ll be doing after the closing. So good!

As mentioned in my previous 2 spazz posts, I can’t get over how awesome 2010 has been already, even barring the total mountain of SUCK that 2009 was. I’m pumped!

thank you, 2010

barely a week in and I am having the best year ever!!!!

It’s official! The Baltimore Community Foundation has announced their Confetti Grant recipients, and the Hexagon is among this group of Awesome! I can’t even begin to express how ecstatic I am about this, how I tiptoed into the space a little over a year ago just to meet some creative people in a new town and am a part of a big quirky family striving to bring the best in emerging art and music to Baltimore. We are so darn pumped. AND totally flattered to receive these grants along with our local friends and colleagues who share our DIY vision. Like seriously, when I look over that list of recipients, I am so proud that we were all considered together.

Go Baltimore!
Go Hexagon!
Go DIY!
Go Collectivism!!
Happy New Year!!!!

JS in CP

I can never say this enough, but my favorite thing about Baltimore is how multi-faceted everyone’s talents are. I pride myself in knowing that I’m friends with some of the most brilliant people I’ve ever met. Like seriously: get our quirky little Smalltimore circles together in a room, and the mind bullets would be astounding.

My pal justin sirois is featured in this week’s City Paper. Here’s hoping that this, along with all the other awesome press he’s received, gets his novel out soon. Good on ya, Little J!

A Heapload of Thanks

to everyone who came out to Saturday’s Holiday Heap!!

Lookit all those people who came out, even in the snow! There were times where you couldn’t even walk through the aisles! (My table and fancy new banner were tucked behind that second pillar on the left.)

We Mafiosos have been gushing to each other about how awesome everyone was–vendors and shoppers, and not sleeping Friday night followed by a loooong 14 hour day was totally worth it. A perfect winter weekend, really. Gigantic snowflakes all day, my favorite crafters, Manfriends earning their keep by helping us break down the space after we were probably too delirious to be on ladders, greeting lots and lots of buddies old and new, a new headband from the Candy Thief, and sooooo. much. coffee.

Newest discovery while work-work-working: Egg Nog instead of cream in my coffee. Amazing.

After a well-earned treat of samosas and jehangiri kofta from my favorite Indian place up the block, I totally crash-snuggled as soon as we left on Saturday. I was looking forward to a day of re-inventorying and looking for the motivation to wear pants on Sunday, until I remembered that I had organized an install day at the gallery! OOPS! all was well though: finally rested, show goes up without a hitch, and a refreshing session of hot hot hot yoga wrapped up the whirlwind weekend.

Re-inventory/re-stock of my Etsy shop this week. Stay tuned!

Warren Seelig @ MICA

!!!

Warren Seelig, one of my mentors from grad school and major influences, is exhibiting a retrospective of his work at MICA! This is awesome news, and I can’t wait to see his fiber pieces in the space. Aww. His critiques were really pivotal in helping me shape my thesis and body of work of the last 3 years. This is so great.

Friday shout-out: Thursday Vinyasa

what? I had to.

what? I had to.

(it’s been a while for one of these, innit?)

I am like, not very graceful, sometimes off-balance, and often teeming with unfocused energy, and this week’s shout-out goes to not only the fabulous people at Charm City Yoga, but specifically to their Thursday night Vinyasa class with Tami. In my efforts to sustain physical and mental equilibrium, I’ve been taking a variety of yoga classes here, and let me just say: Thursday Vinyasa is both meditative and sure to kick your ass.

My bff and I turned last nights session into a little catch-up date, and after a long, rainy day amongst the DC Suits, the slow but full intensity of that class was just what we needed. I’ll probably never be able to do a one-armed handstand with my legs contorted around my ears, but man, Thursday Vinyasa is Where It’s At for the workout and tension-release. If you’ve never been here before, they offer multiple beginner and community classes to try before you commit to the more challenging sessions. Many thumbs up!
