Hexa-update

so this is like, really huge, and if I haven’t seen you in a long time, it’s because I’ve been buried under Board of Directors activities and getting things to sound Just Right and we’ve finally sent out press releases so it’s like Official and Stuff and I’m pretty excited and this has been consuming us for the last few months and hey, this is one sentence because I say it is.

Diamonds on my neck, d-diamonds on my grillll

It’s official! The Baltimore Community Foundation has announced their Confetti Grant recipients, and the Hexagon is among this group of Awesome! I can’t even begin to express how ecstatic I am about this, how I tiptoed into the space a little over a year ago just to meet some creative people in a new town and am a part of a big quirky family striving to bring the best in emerging art and music to Baltimore. We are so darn pumped. AND totally flattered to receive these grants along with our local friends and colleagues who share our DIY vision. Like seriously, when I look over that list of recipients, I am so proud that we were all considered together.

Go Baltimore!
Go Hexagon!
Go DIY!
Go Collectivism!!
Happy New Year!!!!

trifecta bonanza

I blog elsewhere. (Horror of horrors.)

I’ve been blogging at Elsewhere since 2002. (Shock of shocks.)

So I have this other Gurnal and maintain it for a variety of reasons… it’s a place to start/false-start a lot of my ideas, there’s admittedly a degree of brand-loyalty considering I’ve had it for so long, and I have a high level of control over the filters and reader-access. These days, it’s more brainstorming and rambling than anything, but it’s great to have a place where I can dump Feelings, whine about whatever is plaguing me for the week, reflect on former flames/flings, stress about the inner-workings of my personal life… basically it houses the thoughts I want to share with a veryveryvery select group of friends, some thoughts that I wouldn’t want strangers to read.

That said, I totes spazzed about some awesome news I got last night and I thought it would only be appropriate to share, publicly, how I spazzed about it, semi-privately. (and you will read it, and you will see why I don’t blog the way I do here, because it is intended for that tiny pool of friends, without scrutiny)

Look Ma, Handmade!

Catch me, the Charm City Craft Mafia, and many more crafty faves this Saturday at the Squidfire Spring Art Mart! 11-6, Washington Monument (west quadrant), Mt. Vernon. I’m mostly clearing out my inventory in preparation for summer shows… will have blank journals/sketchbooks, pocket-sized things, bookmarks on Italian paper, etc. Hope to see you there; do say hello!

Quickly, though

updates:
I briefly mentioned a while ago all of the hullabaloo surrounding City Council’s Live Entertainment Bill which had the potential to shut down some of Charm City’s favorite venues. The good news though:it’s been gutted! Basically, for reasons that I deem inappropriate to detail in a public blog, the people who had originally proposed it realized that it would be easier to do a re-zone than to theoretically shut down the majority of venues to hear and see live music in the city. Awesome, right?

I am officially the Gallery Coordinator of The Hexagon now! Though slow-going at first, I’m pleased with the small community we’ve been building there, and happy to have been meeting new friends and colleagues. Which means: I’m going to need an intern! Details later, but you’d get to work with me, I’ll teach you some basic preparator skills, and you get to be part of a cool community. More to come.

I was into the idea of free-writin’ my dreams here, especially because I see them indirectly informing some work I’m making with audio and peripheral sounds. I like that, as corny as it is, dream-texts can kind of take you outside of an experience and it becomes this weird blend of foreign and familiar. That was until I had a sequence of dreams Sunday and last night, involving the a private, sort of painful, sort of recent experience, in different forms/settings but of the same subject and… I’m not sure. Add to that, waking up to text messages from someone who hadn’t been on my radar in months but still strangely relates to the story of said dreams. Anyway, that’s something I need to sit on… Valuable in aesthetic theory, I guess, but maybe too valuable for the experience it calls upon.

A very possible 3-person show this summer/fall at a certain 4,000 square foot gallery space in Baltimore. Ohhhhh lordy.

The Craft Mafia will have a couple tents at this weekend’s Squidfire Craft Mart in Mt. Vernon, Baltimore. Flier tomorrow.

doodle-ee doo, doodle-ee doo

I woke up this morning with the sensation of an elephant on my chest. Oh, Stress.

Work:
understaffed, taking on a lot, some exciting, some not-so exciting, paperworkpaperworkpaperwork

Art:
Show goes up this week or next… can’t find silk gauze anywhere… may go completely bonkers and use tulle or even burlap instead. no fiberfil; this stuff needs to be portable when it’s over.

still need to:
knit more wrap around things
wrap wires in glue
get more seed beads, ink, and monofilament

Craft:
two book commissions in one week!

Gallery:
have been sitting on designing the call for entries for weeks. text is all done, just need to lay it out and I Don’t Wanna.
had a friend on facebook offer to be a “personal assistant” in exchange for craft… I was half joking about getting an intern but I might actually take her up on her offer
installing friend’s vinyl lettering tonight
installing member show at the very end of the month
press releases press releases press releases

Other:
writing for a small local art magazine
writing for a local art blog now too I think?
I’m not sure if this garden thing is going to work. maybe I’ll just do some shrubs instead.

Life:
I have a lot of Feelings. and little nice-thing plans that I hope will succeed if I can figure out the logistics of everything.

if that didn’t stress you out, just remember that it’s thesis season and I strangely miss it. for a second.

Off the Wall!

Just got this fabulous flier from Emily c-d, the curator of the upcoming installation at Whole Gallery:

I am excited on so many levels: 1) haven’t shown in Baltimore in a while 2) haven’t done an INSTALLATION in about a year and 3) look at all of the awesome artists on that there flier! I can’t even begin to express how flattered and honored (and a bit intimidated) I am. But I also can’t wait to get this thing going. I’ve been knitting and bending things, and the collaborative opportunities are just gurgling out of this show.

spread the word, friends! Hope to see you at the reception!

Attn: all local DIY lovers!

Baltimore’s City Council is once again working on legislation that could have a very real (and likely, limiting) effect on some of your favorite DIY spaces and venues throughout the city. With the passing of the Live Entertainment – Licensing and Regulation Bill, venues would have to fulfill an extensive list of prerequisites before applying for licenses for events. Though initially well-intentioned, this vague and poorly-written bill essentially limits some of Baltimore’s favorite happenings–dance parties, small shows for local bands, poetry readings, experimental noise collaborations, and other artistic performances–to the very few venues that can afford the licensing fees and ongoing list of other (often extraneous) required services.

What can you do to support your creative colleagues? Read the proposed document here. Check out the City Paper’s article which details the effects this bill could have on all of your favorite venues. And then join your fellow musicians, artists, and DIY fans in any of the following mobilization meetings:

It’s taken me a while to find myself creatively since I’ve moved back to Baltimore. While I do have days where I miss Philadelphia with all my heart, I think this fall I have finally been able to find my little niche here. I’m proud and happy to be a part of some smaller talented co-ops and community groups, and it means so much to me to be able to make things and bounce ideas off other people who love making things.

That said, one of my favorite collectives, The Charm City Craft Mafia, has a big feature in this week’s City Paper, which is also the annual Holiday Guide. Martin Johnson did a great writeup about our group, what we do, and the madness that comes with being a crafter around the holidays.

Look at all of my books! *grin* I hadn’t ever seen Baltimore’s version of a citypaper holiday guide, so I just assumed it would be some other inky black and white photo, in a corner, with my other colleagues on the spread, so imagine my surprise while half asleep on the train, I opened up the CP and there I was… I can’t help feeling a bit self-conscious, but hey, I’m thrilled that the Craft Mafia (and hopefully my Etsy shop, hint hint nudge nudge) will have some good hits as a result of the article. Here’s to digging in my heels and gettin’ comfortable in Baltimore.
