Shorties

So much right now. I had these lovely intentions of blogging about metaphors behind jade circles (bracelets, in particular), saving up for a house and a fancy new computer, and shout-outs to my new intern, but oops–life gobbled all of that up.

Instead, here are some shorties.

From one of my favorite Crafter Blogs, I discovered this idea of the Sacred Six, or as I like to call it, Staying On Top of Your Shit. Our days, no doubt, are teeming with distraction, and I, that always super-focused person (right), am always happy to find ways to streamline the chaos. The Sacred Six. Work. Art. Home. Life. Certainly sounds more appealing than my pile of sticky notes fluttering out from my planner.

Here’s our postcard image so far! As I’ve mentioned, I am nervous and excited about our upcoming show. The guys and I decided on this title because we’re all working with different metaphors of surface and location/displacement, and “terrain” is vague enough to be conceptual as well as physical. Marty made an interesting observation that he and Andrew make very Boyish art–shapes, bright colors, hard lines, so it’ll be interesting to see all three of us in the same space. Postcards go to print this week!

Also, hey: remember this little guy? Charlie-cat, the little peanut I rescued off the street last November?

NOW LOOK AT HIM

Turns out, I rescued a cat-shaped dog.

Later this week, I am off to SF and Northern California to enjoy the pleasures of cheese, friends, art, ocean, and well, a much needed change of scenery. Off to make that Six List for the day…

Assorted photos these days

Swamped this week and trying to be outside as much as possible, before the heat and thick humidity come… here are some assorted pictures (sorry to lack text-substance today, and apparently complete sentences… just busy busy busy)

New Drawings

Since my gallery is forever on hiatus, here are some pics of new drawings I mailed out this weekend. These are material sketches of a drawing-grid installation for a show I’ve got coming up in the fall. I’ve been playing around with perforation and weaving/sewing as mark and varied densities of paper. I also do a wax transfer to the paper in different stages of drawing, making the paper appear a little oily and translucent; depending on the depth of the perforation, the transferred wax can expand into a little halo around the holes. Still finding the perfect paper for these, but will probably go with a thick Okiwara or Hosho blend.

Ikea-Dave

I just bought a cute little laptop thing, so now that the space on my bookshelf partition is cleared up, I essentially have double the work space in my little corner nook. That really just means room for a second cutting mat, and really not a ton of space at all, but makes for a good staging area.

Had to take today off of work to deal with some internal illness crap. ugh. It’s nice to be home during the week, but obviously not so nice when I’m trapped indoors, hugging my insides, and only interested in eating crackers.

Here’s a sneak peak of some drawings I’ve been working on for the show… I’d wanted to post other pictures of things today but it’s time to crawl back into my nausea-cave.

Health, life, fire

I had the pleasure of camping with some good pals this weekend in western MD. Some of us had been itching to go for a while, and what began as lack of any plans other than drinking and roasting foods over fire turned into a tri-state ridiculathon in Virginia, West Virginia, slots, and mud. I’ll spare you the vague inside jokes and just add that despite a few detours here and there, it was so, so, so  nice to be away someplace quiet, no agenda or schedule, just trees and birds and misty air and mud. A smattering of pictures:

Seelenwarmer

Current obsession: installations by Gerda Steiner and Torg Lenzlinger. I love these projects so much, I’m taking them out of my Tumblr dump. I’m not even going to resize this image.

Off the Wall

Here are some shots of my installation at the Off the Wall show… lucked out with the perfect sliver of sunlight the other day!

Jewerly, coloring, and other things

*thanks to Mark and his widget-ing, and thanks to some awesome people I’ve been connecting with over the last couple years, I’ve found that this here blog traffic gets hits other than, I don’t know, the two or three people I already knew were reading. so in an attempt to be more bloggy and less announcy, here are some photos of my completely exciting (not really) life ce week-end!

Do-Ho Suh

I was doing a hard drive cleanup last night, in a bout of thunderstorm insomnia and in preparation for a new giclee print project, and found some old Structure & Metaphor seminar papers… I was writing and printing a lot about displacement, different cultural ideas of home and how we lose our footing in funny metaphorical ways back then (and even as now I guess). Remember Do-Ho Suh? He is easily one of my favorite artists on the planet. I typically gravitate towards subtle text/narrative imagery, things that are quietly intense and referential across different planes (think: ooold Jenny Holzer’s Laments, Sophie Calle, even Ana Mendieta, so good), but Do-Ho Suh is outside of that for me and I just love his work. He’s done some great things at the Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philly and also has a nice bit on PBS’s Art 21 series.

Anyway, here’s some Do-Ho Suh for your rainy day:

No other sound is quite the same as your name

I have been toying with these darn lights for a couple years… When I experiment with them at home, they look totally Boss and Fly or whatever the kids are calling it these days, and every. single. time. I use them on a larger scale, the  motion sensors just don’t work right, or they look completely lame, or one LED flickers out of sync from the others.

We’ll call this LED false start #43854732085743082574089470 because once again, they are not going into my upcoming installation. I was bummed for all of 3 minutes because I was so excited about everyone else installing and I think the artists in this show all respond to each other really well. Catch a sneak peak at the new Whole Gallery Blog. or even a little sneak peak here, because I just dumped a ton of photos from my cell phone onto Flickr:

I’ve been playing with different levels of accumulation and concentration of the line, and I’m please with what I have so far. The next element is a layer of ink dots that play against the density of knots throughout the installation. See for yourself this Saturday!

and just for fun, here are some more photos from the cell phone:
